Svend Poulsen - "Gøngehøvdingen"

Loshultskuppen - Snapphaneriket
Rasmus Svendsens Skole
In the autumn of 1658, King Frederik III sent his experienced soldier, Svend Poulsen, also known as 'Gøngehøvdingen', from Copenhagen to South Sea-land to lead a guerrilla war against the occupying Swedish force.
Svend was good at inciting men to warfare and had great experience in guerrilla warfare. This skill he had gained in Halland and Skåne where he grew up and which was a part of the Danish Kingdom until February 1658. He sailed to Køge and headed for the Faxe region where he stayed at a farm south of Karise. From here he managed to gather 20 brave men who were willing to fight the superior Swedish force. Svend and his men went into battle in several places around the Faxe region before they went on to Næstved and Vordingborg. If you would like more information on Svend Poulsen and his brave men, you can request the leaflet «Svend Poulsen and his men on South Sealand» at Faxe Tourist Information.
