63 mio. years ago, sharks and crocodiles swam in a big sea, while a coral reef rose in the cold waters on the seafloor. Today, the remnants can be found in the Faxe Limestone Quarry.
This fantastic story is described in the recently built Geoscience Museum of Faxe. At the museum you can also experience the hard daily lives of the limestone workers, and learn how the Limestone Quarry became the biggest hole in the ground in Denmark over a period stretching from the Middle Ages to the present day.
The first floor of the museum leans towards the edge of the Quarry, and the large panoramic windows offer a stunning view of the huge white quarry. When your curiosity has been satisfied, you can enjoy a bit to eat and drink in the cosy Cafe.
The museum was founded in 1963. An attractive geological museum, which in a scientifically basis illustrates the far speciel geological development in this part of the country. The exhibition shows different sides of the cultural history in this neighbourhood, especially daily life of the inhabitants of Faks. |
